Laboratory Technician

Jarrod Sitton

Hi, I’m Jarrod. As a laboratory technician, I act as a facilitator for many aspects of the lab and seek to provide support to other members of the team. In addition to carrying out procedures, I assist in ensuring the lab has the resources it requires to function. Being a member of this lab has given me an opportunity to hone my practical skills and use my knowledge to perpetuate meaningful research.

In my free time, I enjoy running, playing tennis, and riding my motorcycle.

Graduate Student

Madison Blea

Hi! My name is Madison, and I am a second-year Ph.D. student. In the lab, I am working on a project to understand the function of a group of Arabidopsis thaliana enzymes in the Domain of Unknown Function (DUF) 821 family. The eight members in this family have been annotated as Rumi-like O-glucosyltransferases, but data I have yielded suggests that their function in Arabidopsis has diverged from their metazoan counterparts and may be implicated in cell wall or protein glycosylation events. I am also working to biochemically characterize glycosyltransferases whose function has been determined genetically to glycosylate cell wall Extensin glycoproteins. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my friends and cats and being outside.

Graduate Student

Alyssa Guarino

My name is Alyssa and I am a second-year Ph.D. student in the biochemistry department. My main projects focus on the Cellulose Synthase Complex (CSC) in Arabidopsis thaliana and how this complex is regulated through post-translational phosphorylation. Using targeted mass spectrometry techniques, I will be able to observe changes in the phosphoproteome to better understand how cellulose synthesis is regulated under different stress or environmental conditions.

I also work with a CSC associated protein called Companion of Cellulose Synthase 1 (CC1) to better understand how cellulose synthesis is regulated under salt stress.

In my free time, I like to explore nature, salsa dance, and spend time with friends.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Caleb Griffith

Hello! My name is Caleb, and I am an undergraduate senior in Biochemistry. In the lab I am working with a novel, programable, phosphoserine incorporation system in E. coli to express and purify phosphorylated proteins involved in the Cellulose Synthase Complex (CSC) in Arabidopsis thaliana. By observing the consequences of these modifications in Vitro we hope to better understand the broader impact of dynamic phosphorylation signaling in cellulose synthesis. Recently, I began working on a method for an improved cell wall polysaccharide assay by modifying an existing library of monoclonal antibodies to be compatible with quantitative immunoPCR.

In my free time I study Japanese, and I also love cooking, gardening, and hanging out with friends.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Alexander Sheriff

In the lab, I am studying fucosylation events on the cell wall by analyzing the effect of the compound 2-fluoro-L-fucose on the RGII polysaccharide. I am currently growing several 2F-Fuc resistant mutants for sequencing to gain a better understanding of how the compound inhibits fucosylation.
I am a biochemistry major who hopes to perform medical research on disease.
Outside of the lab, I enjoy swimming and watching movies with friends. I have two very lazy dogs named Hazel and Matilda.
